“Be Overly Transparent”: Pat Cummings Calls for Honesty and Action on CAWs After Arizona Symposium

Deep breath, everyone. CAW-tent is at an all-time high coming out of the Racing Symposium in Arizona this week, and our good friend Pat Cummings is at the center of it all.

Cummings took to X after the Racing Symposium’s CAW panel and delivered a clear message: racing can’t fix anything until it gets honest about everything.

NYRA’s Policy Shift Gets Cautious Approval

Cummings said he was encouraged by NYRA’s move to slow CAW bet submissions in the final minute but urged realistic expectations.

“It might only dull some of the visible late moves in exactas… I GREATLY appreciate trying something. We’ll see.”

Supportive, but not sold. We’ve been clear in this blog that the move is a spit in the ocean compared to what is needed…but in Pat We Trust.

Raw Odds Data Praised as a Major Step Forward

Cummings showed strong enthusiasm for expanding access to raw odds feeds:

“EVERY track should want that info in the hands of as many active and potential customers as possible.”

Transparency through data remains his biggest priority.

Public Distrust of CAWs Seen as Understandable

Cummings acknowledged the skepticism many bettors hold toward CAWs:

“Most doubts or fears are reasonably based.”

His solution:

“Officials MUST be more open… Be overly transparent.”

Status Quo Called ‘Unsustainable’

Cummings warned the industry that maintaining the current approach is a long-term failure.

“The status quo in U.S. racing betting is entirely unsustainable.”

Horsemen Hold Significant Leverage Over CAW Purse Splits

“The horsemen have HUGE power on this if they exercise it.”

Reports of CAW Philanthropy Surface

Cummings said he’s heard from nonprofit contacts that some CAW groups contribute to aftercare, backstretch aid, and youth initiatives — though he has no direct proof.

Act, Adjust, and Move Forward

“Make changes, adjust as needed, but don’t just stand there.”

A simple directive for a sport that’s been standing still too long.

Cummings is doing the Lord’s work on CAWs, but will anyone listen? That remains to be seen.

Not unlike billionaires and politics — what is logical and reasonably good for the long term benefit of the many isn’t always a priority for those with the keys to the infinite glitch money machine.
